50’s Themed Wedding

Here at Doris Designs, we just love 50’s themed weddings. The  fashion in this decade was certainly a breathe of fresh air! So it’s no wonder that it’s still getting a lot of attention from today’s brides. It’s a great way to bring a smile to relatives’ faces at your wedding who were fortunate to live during this exciting era. Add in a modern twist and you’ll have a wedding to remember by all.

There’s no need to splash out on your fifties wedding. Think Flee markets, car boot sales, charity shops. Make it a bit of fun along the way by visiting these places and you’ll be surprised with what you’ll find.

Your fifties wedding look

There are plenty of designers that make some gorgeous tea-length bridal dresses. We have some gorgeous retailers who sell fifties-style wedding dresses, which you can accessorize with your Doris tulle petticoat. You can also find some great designers on Etsy or find a pre-loved weeding and bridesmaid dresses on EBay or second-hand websites.

You want to look the part on your own wedding day, so remember a few of our top tips. Find a fifties hair stylist and make-up artist– there’s some great ones out there. Lace, bows and pearls were popular in the 1950′s. Introduce these into your 1950s style wedding dress and add a vintage brooch to finish the look. Don’t forget your Doris petticoat to add volume to your 1950s dress and create a slim waistline. For a glam look why not finish the look with long gloves.

Achieving an authentic-feel 1950’s wedding with Doris Designs

Introduce your guests to the theme early on with vintage-style invites. Add in a bit of fun and ask (not insist) your guests to dress fifties-style – you’ll be surprised at how many will.

Your choice of venue and the colours and decoration all add to your fifties wedding feel. Consider an afternoon tea party wedding with gorgeous vintage crockery – there’s some amazing suppliers out there like ‘Cup of Vintage’ who offer an amazing service and make your wedding look authentic . Or a marquee in an overgrown English country garden. Introduce a pastel colour scheme e.g. dusky pinks, blues and greens and patterns such as florals, polka dots or checks.

The transport

Add a bit of fun transporting your guests to the venue (if required) by giving them the opportunity to ride on an original 1950’s bus. Add in some 50’s style music and you’ll have people smiling their way to the venue.

The Music

Music… well, Music is certainly something that everyone enjoys. How about hiring in a jukebox? This will allow your guests to pick their favourite 50′s tunes. Or even bring in a 50′s style band with costumes! But remember to play music of all eras throughout the evening to appeal to everyone and get feet of all ages dancing.

Add some extra touches

  • Use vintage suitcases to decorate the venue or even put them in the boot of your vintage car for some fantastic photos.
  • Buy an original 1950′s cake topper – check out Ebay for these pieces.
  • Get a vintage typewriter in and ask guests to add their messages and then turn the papers into a wedding message book.
  • Ask your more mature relatives to share their fifties photos to display
  • Check out 50’s style photographers – having the photographer under his black camera sheet will give everyone an authentic fifties wedding feel.

To all you lovely brides-to-be, remember what beautiful Audrey Heprun said about marriage:

If I get married, I want to be very married!
