Zoe & Rob’s Woodland Festival Wedding

Tania Marston

Zoie and her husband Robert, who live in Waterfoot Rawtenstall, got engaged in May 2016.  On the last day of their Italian holiday Rob secretly hired a speed boat and stashed a picnic on board.  This is when their wonderful wedding journey started…

“Rob took me out to the middle of Lake Garda, had our song on a speaker, got down on one knee and popped the question. We were both so emotional it took us 20 minutes to remember we had champagne with us which subsequently we both ended up wearing when we opened it as it exploded all over the boat.”

Postponing our wedding…

“Unfortunately six months’ before our wedding day, my health went downhill and I ended up in hospital. We had to postpone the wedding by a year to allow me to recover. I was really fortunate as my suppliers were all amazing and worked with me to arrange a new date and get everything back on track.”

Festival style…

“Once the run up to the new date began, and I was back on the mend, it all went by so quickly! We organised a woodland festival wedding.”

1950s Wedding“We chose to have our reception in the woods at Gisburn Forest; somewhere we both loved and it felt so natural!”

1950s Wedding“This isn’t typically a wedding venue and we had to apply to the forestry commission to be allowed to put up a tipi on their land. It all went without a hitch and our tipi company, Timber & Canvas, worked with us to get the relaxed wedding we had dreamed of. We also had a village of bell tents for all our guest to stay in after the wedding. We both wanted a wedding that was relaxed and fun for us, and our guests.”

1950s Wedding1950s Wedding1950s WeddingManchester food delivery please…

“We wanted to incorporate our favourite food from the city Manchester, where we lived for five years. So we hired our favourite companies to cater our wedding; we had amazing crazy burgers (Dirty Food Revolution), Fish & Chips (Hip-hop Chip shop) and Crapes serving food all day. Food has always been a massive part of our relationship, as we spend most weekends in Manchester checking out food festivals and trying to eat our way through the city! So we wanted to share some of the food we loved with all our guests! This was one of the reasons we wanted a tipi wedding as it meant we were in control of the catering which you don’t typically get with most venues.”

1950s WeddingTwo dresses for one…

“The main theme for the wedding was floral. We had pastel colours and everything was based around the stunning bridesmaid dresses. My dress was handmade and designed by the amazing talented girls at Legend Brides!! I loved every appointment! They were amazing with everything from helping me design the dress, to the adjustments or me asking for last minute accessories! I couldn’t recommend them more!  I wanted a more formal dress for the church but always wanted my wedding dress to be a 50’s style dress as it’s a style I have always loved. We then decided to have two dresses in one!”

1950s Wedding1950s Wedding“I had a full length ivory satin over-skirt with a train to get married in. And then I whipped the skirt off and underneath was an ivory tulle 50’s dress with blush fabric petal stitched round the hem and a Doris Designs Petticoat! I also had a full length veil covered in fabric petals, which later detached in to a short shoulder-length veil to go with the 50’s dress. They also made a beautiful flower crown. It was everything I ever wanted. I also had two pairs of Irregular Choice shoes for each dress and  later pinched my auntie’s pink wellies to trek round the field in!”

1950s WeddingFloral bridesmaids & matching ties…

“For my Bridesmaid dresses I wanted 50’s style dresses. We found a company online called Little Wing Factory who sold the most beautiful floral design dresses that were exactly what I wanted and also really inexpensive! I was thrilled but we wanted to give them an extra pop so  we added the Doris Design Petticoats in pink which just made them perfect!”1950s Wedding1950s Wedding1950s Wedding1950s Wedding“We had to go on a bit of a mission for the groom’s suit! Rob had found a company online that made vintage inspired wedding suits (The Vintage Suit Hire Company) and decided that was the suit he wanted to wear on the big day. It was a navy wool three-piece and complete with a pocket watch. He loved it so much he bought it to keep.”

1950s Wedding“The groomsmen s’ outfits were all three-piece navy suits hire from a local shop Menswear at Amelias. Unfortunately for all the men, I paired them with Floral Pastel ties to co-ordinate with my bridesmaids.”

Hair and make-up

“I had my makeup done by a lovely make-up artist based in Sheffield called Holly Harper MUA who was so friendly and laid back . My makeup was amazing and didn’t budge all day! My lovey friend, Amber Dawson, who is a hairdresser did my hair on the morning, I had it down & curly with a side braid.”

1950s WeddingFlowers

“I love wild flowers as they are my absolute favourite. I worked with a company called The Flower Girls Whalley.  Laura who worked there was amazing – togetherwe designed my bouquet with wild flowers, peonies & roses all in pastel colours. It was absolute beautiful. My Bridesmaids all had a bouquet of wild flowers which complement their floral bridesmaid dresses perfectly.”

1950s Wedding1950s WeddingThe Transport

“My wedding transport was a surprise from my mum and I though we were going in my dads Land Rover but she has secretly hired a vintage jaguar which was perfect to take me to the church, From the church to venue we went in my husband’s pride and  joy which is his old BMW.”

Busy photographer/bridesmaid…

“Choosing a photographier was the easiest decision for me! My Auntie is an incredible Wedding photographer (Zoie Carter-Ingham) and  I have always wanted her to capture my day. However I also wanted her to be my bridesmaid so she had the hard job of running around in a bridesmaid dress with a camera all day. I wanted really relaxed pictures of the day and the images she captured are so amazing.”1950s Wedding1950s WeddingThe first dance

“Our first dance song was Katy Perry’s song, ‘Double Rainbow’.  This is the song that Rob played when he proposed to me.”1950s Wedding1950s Wedding1950s WeddingOne of my favourite moments from our wedding was my mum’s Mother-of-the-bride speech. She had my entire childhood on a projector screen with music and funny stories. It was absolutely amazing and made me very emotional.
